Dutch Hollow Cattle Company is a small family farm located in the scenic hinterlands north of Lexington, Virginia, and west of Interstate 81. The farm is run by husband-and wife-team Butch Snow and Melody Tennant. Foodwaze has had a chance to visit their farm to learn first-hand about their practices.
They raise a herd of about 90 beef cattle that are a mix of Black Angus and Gelbvieh breeds. The cows are raised on several hundred acres around the home of Snow and Tennant. Some of the pastures are rented from neighbors. They rotate the herd among approximately nine different pastures. They also supplement their feeding with hay in the wintertime, which is given to the animals out in the fields. Their hay is purchased from off the farm, and while it is not guaranteed to be pesticide free, we are confident in the farm’s commitment to sound and healthy ecological practices.
Snow and Tennant have been running the farm together since 2005. They are both orginally from California. He’s a former computer executive and she is a former educator. Tennant is also a trained health coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. It was through her work there that she became commitment to holistic practices, which are embodied in their grass-fed-and-finished beef.
Dutch Hollow sells their beef to a few select businesses around the area. Please check the Places tab for the current list. You can also contact the farm directly to purchase.
